Like a heavyweight fight, Tuesday night’s rivalry game between Greenbrier and Lakeside came down to the last punch.

Down 11-5, the Wolfpack scratched out three runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth inning, pulling out a 12-11 win.

With the win, the Wolfpack clinched Region 2-AAAA as they ran their record to 14-2 overall, 8-0 in the region.

“I don’t know that the best team won tonight’s game,” Greenbrier head coach Chris Wilkins said. “(Lakeside) certainly seemed like the best team today, but somehow we found a way to win and we’re going to have to do that going down the line.”

Steven Maier scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth, but the Panthers (9-8, 0-7) wouldn’t go quietly.

With one out, Tanner Brassell and Tanner Durand singled. One out later, Cole Pittman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Reliever Adam Grice, the Wolfpack’s third pitcher of the night, had a full count on Chandler Corey before striking him out to end the game. Grice earned his fourth save of the year while Christian Hill (4-1) got the win.

It looked like the game would be the Wolfpack’s from the get-go as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first. The scrappy Panthers answered with five of their own in the top of the third, all coming with two outs.

The Panthers would add four in the top of the fourth, the big blow a two-run single from Evan Krenz.

Krenz pitched the final two innings for the Panthers and took the loss.

The Wolfpack were able to take advantage of five Panthers’ errors during the game, scoring three unearned runs in the sixth inning.

For the Panthers, Durand was two for five with two RBI and Lane Wallace was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Grice was 2 for 4 with three RBI for the Wolfpack, while Clint Hardy, Jordan Hunt and Spencer Duffie each added two hits.
