NORTH AUGUSTA -- Fox Creek High School graduates were told to remember three things as they start the next chapter in their life during the graduation ceremony Thursday.
WJBF Channel 6 news anchor Brad Means was the keynote speaker for the graduation held at Sweetwater Baptist Church.
Through anecdotes, he encouraged them to use internships to gain experience and set themselves apart from others and to always smile and have a sense of humor. He also encouraged them to do positive things and shared examples of how many of the graduates were already doing that through their daily activities such as volunteering, participating in academic clubs and sports, and helping their families.
The class of 2012 was the last class to attend school in Fox Creek’s former building on Martintown Road before it moved to its current location on Shortcut Road and is also the last class to graduate from the school under the Edgefield County School District.
Starting in the 2012-13 school year, the charter school will be a part of the South Carolina Public Charter School District. The district’s superintendent Wayne Brazell, was the ceremony’s guest speaker.
Ginny Simmons, the class salutatorian, graduated with a 4.986 GPA. During her salutatorian address, she reminded her classmates of the close bond they created over the past four years.
“Facing the many giants in high school has, at times, been difficult, but it would have been even more so if we had not helped each other and encouraged one another along the way,” she said. “…We have stood up for each other and refused to let our differences get in the way. Instead of letting giants come in and separate us, we have worked together as one to overcome barriers.”
The class valedictorian, Jeremy Weeks, also referenced the “giants” the class has faced and encouraged his classmates to not be fearful of the future.
“None of us know yet what lies ahead or what new obstacles we will encounter,” said Weeks, who graduated with a 5.312 GPA. “We need to be courageous and seek new people, places and experiences for the opportunities they present.”
