Best & Brightest: About the awards
Web posted Sunday, May 20, 2007
Today, The Augusta Chronicle recognizes 25 outstanding members of the Class of 2007 – the winners of our annual Best & Brightest Awards. This is the fifth year The Chronicle has selected top high school seniors for this award.
We sent letters to principals and guidance counselors inviting them to nominate students. Nomination information also was published in the newspaper throughout March.
The newspaper received almost 160 nominations. From this group, the Chronicle’s education reporting staff selected the 25 finalists profiled in this section. Some are valedictorians or salutatorians, but most are not. In addition to academic performance, students were selected for their participation in extracurricular activities, community service, leadership and good character. The summaries in this section contain only a portion of the many activities and accomplishments that filled their nomination forms.
Our finalists will be recognized Monday evening at the Best & Brightest Banquet at the Augusta Marriott Hotel & Suites. Three judges from the community interviewed the finalists April 26 and selected the top five. Four will receive $100 and the highest-scoring student will receive $500. The winners will be announced at Monday’s banquet and published in Tuesday’s Chronicle.
