Tom Lehman leads Champions Tour event



THE WOODLANDS, Texas — Tom Lehman had an eagle and five birdies on the first eight holes on the back nine, then bogeyed the par-4 18th for 7-under-par 65 and a one-shot lead after the first round of the Champions Tour’s Insperity Championship.

Fred Funk and Tom Jenkins were tied for second, and past winners John Cook and Bernhard Langer topped a large group at 68.

Michael Allen, coming off consecutive victories, opened with 69.


EUROPEAN TOUR: In Seville, Spain, Italian teen Matteo Manassero moved into contention with a 2-under-par 70 after the second round at the 100th Spanish Open.

Manassero finished at 4 under overall, one stroke behind leader Gregory Bourdy (66) in windy conditions.

The 19-year-old Manassero shared second place with Jorge Campillo (72), of Spain, and the England duo of Robert Rock (72) and Simon Dyson (69).

Former PGA Championship winner Shaun Micheel, the first-round leader, bogeyed his last three holes to shoot 77 and slip to even par overall.

Scott Jamieson, a former Augusta State golfer, shot 78-77–156 and missed the cut by eight shots.


NATIONWIDE TOUR: In Athens, Ga., former Lakeside golfer Brian Carter came up four shots short in his bid to make the cut in his first professional start.

Carter, a sophomore on the Georgia golf team, finished at 2-over-par 144 in the Stadion Classic at UGA. He shot a pair of 72s.

Also missing the cut, which fell at 140, was Carter’s Georgia teammate Nicholas Reach, who shot 75-72–147.

Carter and Reach were given sponsor exemptions into the tournament by virtue of having the top two scoring averages this season on the Georgia team.

Billy Horschel shot 63 on Friday to claim a share of the lead at 10-under 132 with Jim Herman (66 on Friday).

Aiken native Matt Hendrix had 71 and is at 139. Augusta’s Scott Parel (69 on Friday) and Aiken’s Alex Hamilton (72) missed the cut after both finished at142
