Overton warms up with 67 at Turning Stone

VERONA, N.Y. --- Jeff Overton shot 5-under-par 67 on Thursday to take the first-round lead at the Turning Stone Resort Champion-ship, the second stop on the PGA Tour's Fall Series.


Overton, who started in the afternoon when temperatures warmed up, has a one-shot lead over Michael Allen and Steve Allan. It was 48 degrees with a 20 mph wind when play started.

Augusta native Charles Howell had 71, while Evans resident Vaughn Taylor shot 75 and former Augustan Richard Johnson shot 76.

Defending Turning Stone champ Steve Flesch shot 74.

LPGA TOUR: In Half Moon Bay, Calif., Ji-Yai Shin birdied four consecutive holes on the back nine to shoot 5-under-par 67 and take a one-shot lead in the Samsung World Championship.

Paula Creamer had 68 and six players had 69, including Lorena Ochoa and Annika Sorenstam.

EUROPEAN TOUR: In St. Andrews, Scotland, Soren Hansen and Ross Fisher shot 8-under-par 64 to share the first-round lead at the Alfred Dunhill Links Champ-ionship.

Former Augusta State player Oliver Wilson, in his first event since going 1-1-0 in the Ryder Cup, shot 69. Gary Murphy, another former Jaguar, had 74.

ASIAN TOUR: In Seoul, South Korea, U.S. Ryder Cup star Anthony Kim took the lead at the Korea Open with a 7-under-par 64, finishing the opening day two shots ahead of the field.

The 23-year-old held a two-shot lead over Kim Jong-Myung.
