Jaguars coach advances at Mid-Am

MILWAUKEE, Wis. --- Augusta State men's golf coach Josh Gregory on Sunday secured a spot in match play at the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Milwaukee Country Club.


The event is for players aged 25 and older.

Gregory closed with 3-over-par 73 to finish at 4-over 144 for stroke play. He tied for 19th and was well within the top 64 who advanced.

Augusta State alum Chris Kuhlke (74-75) finished 9-over and missed match play by two shots. Augusta native and Georgia Tech alum Adam Cranford (78-80) failed to qualify at 18-over.

WOMEN'S EUROPEAN TOUR: In Helsingoer, Denmark, Annika Sorenstam ended her pro career in Europe by finishing third in the Nykredit Masters.

The 37-year-old Hall of Famer from Sweden closed with 2-under-par 71, leaving her five shots behind winner Martina Eberl, of Germany. Eberl closed with 66 for a 14-under 205 total. England's Melissa Reid shot 73 to finish a stroke back in second.

EUROPEAN TOUR: In Crans-sur-Sierre, Switzerland, France's Jean-Francois Lucquin won the European Masters, beating Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy with a birdie on the second hole of a playoff.

The 19-year-old McIlroy, who held a four-shot lead going into the final round, missed a 5-foot putt for victory on No. 18. He then missed a 1-footer and made bogey on the second playoff hole before Lucquin holed a 12-footer for his first European Tour win.

Lucquin shot 4-under-par 67 to tie McIlroy (71) at 13-under 271.

NATIONWIDE TOUR: In Sandy, Utah, Brendon Todd won the Utah Championship for his first Nationwide Tour title, closing with 4-under-par 67 for a six-stroke victory over six players.

The former Georgia star had a 22-under 262 total on the Willow Creek Country Club course.

Todd earned $99,000 to jump from 53rd to 15th on the money list with $194,961. The top 25 at the end of the season will earn 2009 PGA Tour cards.

Todd opened with rounds of 64, 66 and 65.
