GHSA golf championships come to local courses

Augusta golfers might have a tough time securing a tee time at their favorite course today or Monday.

The Georgia High School Association state golf championships are being held at 10 area courses Monday, and teams arrived Saturday to get in practice rounds that will continue today.

It’s the first time the GHSA has held all of its golf championships in one area, according to Augusta Sports Council CEO Brinsley Thigpen.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime event for Augusta,” she said. “It’s awesome.”

About 900 golfers are expected to compete in five classes each for boys and girls. When you count coaches, parents and other spectators, Thigpen said the event could bring more than 2,000 people to Augusta.

A drop-in was held Saturday night at Christenberry Fieldhouse for participants.

The format for each tournament is stroke play.

Boys teams can play six golfers and count the low four scores. Girls will play four and count two, according to tournament director Wade Marchman.

“It’s never been done before, and we were pretty much the guinea pig to see if we could pull this off,” said Marchman, who is the athletic director at Burke County High School. “We’ve got a ton of volunteers.”

Golfers will tee off at 8 a.m. at each site.

“The reason we were able to bring this event to the (Augusta area) was the support we have received from the 10 local golf courses,” Marchman said. “Their golf professionals and members are giving up their course for the day. That’s why we were able to do it.”
