Weiss goes for Regions record

Doug Weiss can do something this weekend that no one in the 23-year history of the Regions Bank Amateur Series has accomplished: Win four consecutive tournaments.

The Evans resident will begin his quest today when the 54-hole Augusta City Amateur begins this morning at Forest Hills Golf Club. He goes off at 10:53.

"This being the city amateur, which has probably the strongest field we have all year, that would be a quite a feat," Weiss said of breaking the record in this tournament.

Regions series stars from the past such as Vaughn Taylor, Scott Parel, Scott Brown, Michael Carlisle, Mitch Marchman and Terry Ezell won three in a row during their careers, but couldn't get the fourth.

Current stars such as Kenny Larry and Jay Blackburn haven't pulled off the feat, either.

Larry has had plenty of opportunities -- he holds the career record for senior division victories with 17 in his five-plus years as a senior.

Blackburn is the regular division leader in wins with 12, but has never won three in a row. Weiss is tied for second on the career wins list with nine.

"It's very difficult because you have to keep your concentration to do it," Larry said of winning four in a row. "The competition is tough. It would be a great accomplishment for him to win. He's certainly good enough and strong enough to win. I wish him the best of luck."

Weiss is quite familiar with Forest Hills. It was his home course during his years as an Augusta State golfer (1986-89). He's come close in the city amateur, finishing second in 2007 and tied for fifth in 2008. He didn't play the past two years because of work schedule commitments.

"The four in a row is not more important to me than the city amateur is," Weiss said. "The city amateur is the biggest amateur tournament in Augusta."

A victory would also give Weiss a sweep of the "city amateur titles" at Forest Hills. He won the Augusta City Junior there in 1985, shooting 5-under for the 36-hole event.

Weiss' current win streak started May 22, when he won at Persimmon Hill. He followed that with wins at Belle Meade Country Club on June 4 and the City of Augusta Match Play Championship at Augusta Municipal Golf Course on June 19.

Weiss didn't play in the Goshen Golf Classic June 25-26 because he attended a friend's wedding out of town.

Despite missing the Goshen event, Weiss is still running away with the points race for Player of the Year honors, which he has won the past three years.

Through six events of the 10 events in the series, Weiss has 290 points. Michael Phelps is next with 97.

In addition to his three wins, Weiss tied for third and tied for fifth in his other two starts this season.

Weiss, who won just once last year, already has more points than he earned in two of three player of the year seasons. He finished with 275 points in 2008,, 259 in 2009 and 299 in 2010.

The record for consecutive victories on the Regions Bank Amateur Series is three. Seven players have done it since the series started in 1988, including Kenny Larry, who has done it twice in the senior division.

The others are Scott Brown, Mitch Marchman, Terry Ezell and Jamie Felder in the regular division and Larry, Mike Jackson and Michael Benham among the seniors.

Larry has come the closest to breaking the record. In his bid for four in a row in 2009, he lost in a sudden-death playoff in the Jones Creek Classic.

Doug Weiss has missed four of the past six Augusta City Amateurs at Forest Hills Golf Club because of work commitments. He has top-five finishes in the two he did play in:

2010: DNP

2009: DNP

2008: T5

2007: 2nd

2006: DNP

2005: DNP
