Not long ago a co-worker and I were talking about our children. She was surprised to learn that I had six of them, and even more surprised to learn their ages. It didn't take her long to realize that rearing my children was a responsibility that I took very seriously. In fact, of all the hats that I'm required to wear, the one that says Dad is my favorite.

Hearty soups, stews and chili are my family's winter weather favorites. My 10-year-old daughter C.C., in particular, is a big chili fan. To satisfy her craving I taught her how to make an easy batch of chili on her own.

Before your youngster begins exploring stove-top cooking, remember to take the time to give them some safety tips. Offer to help them drain the beef, since wielding a big, hot Dutch oven can be dangerous.
