Fill the fieldhouse tonight

ASU Jaguars poised to add to their legacy of basketball excellence

Tonight is it.

It's the last chance to see Ben Madgen, one of the best basketball players in the country and the all-time scoring leader in Augusta State University and Peach Belt Conference history.

It's the last chance to see the other seniors too, including one of the most exciting, "flea"-footed point guards in the nation, Daniel "Flea" Dixon.

And it's a great chance to urge the Jaguars, 28-3, on to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional championship and a berth in the national Elite Eight, which is on the line tonight.

Augusta State has made it to the Final Four in Division II basketball the past two years. What an incredible feat. Yet, this team has a chance to make it three in a row. And after lighting up the scoreboard for 100 points in Sunday's semifinal game, the Jaguars look capable of even more than that.

Tonight's game at 7 p.m. at Christenberry Fieldhouse off Wrightsboro Road will be a huge hurdle, though: The Jags' opponent, Montevallo, 25-7, has been to five such regional tournament final games in seven years. Montevallo, a newcomer to the Peach Belt, also beat Augusta State in the conference tournament semifinals March 6.

This edition of the Augusta State University Jaguars, like the two just prior, is an extraordinarily special team, and tonight's will be one of the most important games it ever plays. It will be intense for two hours, and will feature two of the best teams in the nation in Division II basketball.

Win, and the Jaguars go on to Springfield, Mass., for the national championship rounds. But either way, it will be the last game on the Christenberry floor for some of the most beloved athletes this town has ever called their own.

This team deserves as big and loud a hometown send-off as any team in the country, or as any Augusta team ever has.

"I'm just really glad we get to play one more home game for these five seniors," says Coach Dip Metress. So are we.

Folks will be talking about this team for years. You really ought to come and see what they'll be talking about.
