Bottom line

Augusta Richmond County Coliseum Authority members appear ready to save us from themselves today.

Members last month set the stage to hire an Atlanta promoter at an initial cost of $150,000 a year to push for a new arena of up to 20,000 seats costing up to $250 million.

This, despite the fact that voters have turned down such a proposal in better times - and despite the fact that there's no visible support from voters or the Augusta commissioners who would have to put it on a ballot.

The good news is Chairman Richard Isdell says the authority today seems likely to vote against the hiring of promoter Jerry Dickerson.

We don't know what got into authority members - maybe voters got in their face? - but we're glad. It was a cockamamie scheme from the start in any economic times, and a looming disaster in today's economy.
