Good dog

We've all heard the old phrase "You look like your dog just died." It's an expression we use to tell recipients that they look unbearably sad.

The fact that it is an old phrase shows the emotional attachment people have to their dogs. A dog so often isn't just a mere animal. They become part of the household unit. They pose in family photos. They become beloved family members .

So it is with Uga.

For more than 50 years, the situation has been this: Other colleges have mascots. The University of Georgia has an icon -- and a part of the UGA family.

Uga VI, the reigning descendant in the line of UGA mascots, died Saturday of heart failure at his Savannah home.

He truly embodied the spirit and determination of UGA athletics. He was the winningest football mascot UGA ever had; the team went 87-27 on his watch.

That lucky dog.
