Several local teams in state softball playoffs

The Georgia High School Association state softball playoffs get under way with doubleheaders Wednesday. Here's a look at the best-of-3 matchups for local teams:

Class A

Athens Christian at Washington-Wilkes

The Lady Tigers have had an up-and-down season, but a perfect region record gave them the top seed out of Region 7-A. Athens Christian swept Galloway in a play-in series to reach the playoffs.

Lincoln County at Providence Christian

Of all area teams in the postseason, few have a tougher draw than Lincoln County. The Lady Red Devils travel to face a sixth-ranked Stars team that came within a win of the state championship game last season.

Class AA

Screven County at Cook

A pair of region tournament losses to Dodge County send 24-8 Screven County on the road as a No. 3 seed. The Lady Gamecocks will be a tough out against Cook, which has won 11 of its past 16 games.

Class AAA

Cairo at Harlem

The Lady Bulldogs lost the Region 3-AAA championship, but they appear to be the winners in the Class AAA draw. Harlem faces a Cairo team that finished the regular season 10-17 and made the playoffs by virtue of playing in a weak Region 1-AAA.

Washington County at Crisp County

Washington County had a perfect region record, but two losses to Thomson in the region tournament dropped the Golden Hawks to the third seed. They will take on a Crisp County team that has struggled since the middle of the season, losing seven of its past 13.

Americus-Sumter at Thomson

The Lady Bulldogs stormed back to win the Region 3-AAA tournament and a No. 1 seed with two wins over Harlem last week. Their reward? A home series against a team that went 7-22 this season.

Cross Creek at Worth County

The fourth-seeded Lady Razorbacks have struggled down the stretch, losing 11 of their past 16 games. They will travel to play Worth County, which has lost in the first round in each of the past two seasons but is 26-2 and ranked fifth in the state this year.

Class AAAA

North Clayton at Greenbrier

Another season, another region championship and No. 1 seed for the Wolfpack. Winners of 15 of its past 16 games, Greenbrier will likely have little trouble with fourth-seeded North Clayton.

Evans at Morrow

A rare mediocre season has resulted in a rare road playoff opener for the third-seeded Lady Knights. At 18-5, the Mustangs will not be a pushover.
