Beech Island man arrested in Richmond County for possession

A Beech Island man was charged Friday in Richmond County with possession of a handgun, theft by receiving stolen property, as well as possession and intent to distribute marijuana.

Lawrence Boyd Jr., 25, was traveling eastbound on Reynolds Street when deputies noticed an Augusta Auto Auction paper tag falling off the vehicle, according to a report from the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Approaching the vehicle, deputies smelled a strong odor of marijuana, the report said.

Boyd was asked to step out of the vehicle and then granted permission for the deputies to frisk him for weapons. During the search, Deputy Kenneth McKenzie felt a large bulge in Boyd’s front-right pants pocket, and another in his front jacket pocket, the report said.

Deputy McKenzie detained Boyd for officer safety before locating a semi-automatic handgun in his pants. In Boyd’s jacket, deputies found 29 grams of marijuana, a black digital scale and nine plastic bags, the report said.

Inside the vehicle, deputies found 19 grams of marijuana underneath the passenger seat, according to the report. After further investigation, deputies learned the handgun had been reported stolen in Jackson S.C., the report said.

Boyd was transported to Richmond County jail.
