Man in hospital after shooting involving Richmond County narcotics officer

One man is in the hospital after a shooting involving a Richmond County Sheriff’s narcotics officer, authorities said.

Around 4 p.m. Saturday, a narcotics squad was out checking a house in the 1100 block of 10th Avenue because they had received information it was being used as a drug house, Richmond County Sheriff Ronnie Strength said.

When officers arrived, one man was leaving and took off when he spotted them. While he was running, he tossed some drugs and pulled out a handgun and pointed it at an officer.

The officer shot the man in the foot. He was taken to the hospital, Strength said.

As is policy with a shooting involving an officer, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate.

Strength said officers found the drugs and recovered the man’s gun at the scene. He did not have names of the men involved.
