North Augusta man gets probation in fatal shooting of brother

AIKEN - A man who accidentally shot his brother in October will serve 18-months of probation.

Antonio Middleton, 20, of North Augusta, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in General Sessions Court Tuesday. Middleton was sentenced to a Youthful Offender Act sentenced not to exceed five years, which was suspended to probation. The family requested that Middleton not serve time for shooting of his 21-year-old brother Lee Andrew Middleton, said Assistant Solicitor David Miller. The incident happened at the brother's apartment complex in the 400 block of Bradleyville Road on Oct. 2.

The victim died from injuries of one gunshot wound to the chest, Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said.

North Augusta Department of Public Safety Lt. Tim Pearson said the shooting was not done out of malice or intent at the end of the investigation.

"Mr. Middleton did have the gun in his hand, and it discharged," Pearson said shortly after the incident. "He has to take responsibility for that."
