Man is charged in May shooting death


An Augusta man has been charged in connection with a fatal shooting May 16.

According to Richmond County jail records, Jonathan Devar Harrell, 19, of the 500 block of Richmond Hill Road, was charged with murder, two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a first offender probationer.

The fatal shooting occurred at the Econo Lodge at 2051 Gordon Highway. The victim, 20-year-old Tremayne Cobb, accidentally walked into the crossfire as two groups exchanged gunfire and was struck by a stray bullet.

North Augusta panel OKs development

North Augusta City Council approved the Gardner's Landing planned development on final reading by a 5-2 vote Monday.

Gardner's Landing is to be built on 29.46 acres next to the RiverNorth subdivision along the Savannah River.

Man shot in leg during Evans home invasion

A 25-year-old man was shot in the leg during an Evans break-in Monday morning.

A Columbia County sheriff's report says a burglar entered the home in the 500 block of Blue Ridge Crossing about 2:30 a.m. He pointed a handgun and demanded money from a man sleeping there. When the man said he had no money, he went into another bedroom, where a man and woman were in bed.

When the man started to fight him, the burglar pulled his handgun and pointed it at the man's forehead. The woman pulled the handgun down as it discharged, wounding the man in his left thigh. The thief fled with the man's wallet. The victim was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, the report says.

The intruder was described as black, about 6-foot-1 to 6-foot-3, weighing between 200 and 230.

Three teens arrested after 2-county chase

Three teenagers were arrested Sunday after a police chase.

The teens, whose names were not released, are charged with theft by receiving stolen property, according to Capt. Steve Morris of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office. Two are 16 years old and another is 15.

Richmond County deputies began following the stolen Chevrolet pickup after the driver came close to hitting a deputy's vehicle near Capps Street and Wrightsboro Road about 9:30 p.m., Richmond County sheriff's Maj. Richard Weaver said. They chased the truck to the Columbia County line, where Columbia County deputies took over.

The teens were arrested at the Arrow Wood trailer park on Wrightsboro Road in Grovetown.
