Weekly picks in Georgia high school football

Westside at Josey

The Patriots clinch a spot in the state playoffs with a victory. Though they’re dealing with some injuries, they should stop their losing streak at three games and punch their ticket to the postseason.

Westside, 28-7

Jefferson County at Thomson

Expect the Bulldogs to complete an unbeaten regular season. Jefferson County has a strong defense, but Thomson has too many playmakers to be kept quiet for very long.

Thomson, 35-14

Lakeside at Warner Robins

Lakeside is in the playoffs, but it would like to bring momentum there by beating a powerful Demons squad. Warner Robins just lost to Northside by seven, so it’ll be fired up to return to its winning ways.

Warner Robins, 41-21

Richmond Academy at South Effingham

The Musketeers have won three in a row to get the subregion’s No. 2 seed for the play-in game. But Richmond Academy not only has to win on the road, but it also must beat a team it has struggled against. In two games – 2004 and 2005 – South Effingham has outscored the Musketeers 62-0.

South Effingham, 27-14

Cross Creek at Statesboro

Like Richmond Academy, Cross Creek is in a play-in game. But the Razorbacks have a much higher hill to climb, considering the Blue Devils are 7-2. In two meetings, Statesboro has won by a combined 109-7, but those were in 2002 and 2003.

Statesboro, 35-0

Burke County at Wayne County

This is for the Region 3-AAAA title. Burke County has already defeated Wayne County, getting a 50-21 rout the first week in October. The Bears visit the Yellow Jackets this time, but Burke County shouldn’t have too much trouble getting the win.

Burke County, 41-24

Aquinas at First Presbyterian

The Irish have posted consecutive blowout wins after they dropped two in a row, so perhaps Aquinas is rounding into form again. Brendan Douglas has been hindered by a broken hand, but Aquinas could win again.

Aquinas, 24-21
