Monday Musings

1. Even after a defeat, Laney should still be considered one of the area’s best teams. Westminster is a top-10 contender in Class AA – just like the Wildcats – but Laney looked like the better team. The Wildcats put up 464 yards and always seemed to be threatening to score.

The next step for Laney? Finish those drives.

2. Congrats to Glenn Hills, who was a 29-point victor against Josey. Among the Spartans’ accomplishments:

-At 1-0, they’ve already matched 2011’s win total.

-The 41 points were better than any single-game total going back to Sept. 17, 2010.

-The 12 points allowed tied 2011’s best single-game showing.

But to be 2-0 for the first time in five years, Glenn Hills must beat Laney. The two meet for the first time in nine years this Friday.

3. Welcome back to the big time, Washington-Wilkes. The Tigers upset Class A’s top team, rival Lincoln County, and should find themselves in the Class AA polls very soon.

4. As for the Red Devils, they could take solace in not being the only ranked team to fall; it was a very messy week in Class A.

In the AP Poll: No. 1 Lincoln County, No. 2 Wilcox County, No. 8 Charlton County, No. 9 Landmark Christian and No. 10 Emanuel County Institute all lost.

This week’s poll arrives Tuesday. Aquinas was No. 5 Class A and could receive from first-place votes after all the mess.

This week’s best:

Burke County at Coffee

The first road game of the season for the Bears is a trip to a 2-0 Class AAAAAA school.

Washington County at Baldwin

A year ago, Burke County opened its state-title season by beating Baldwin. This season, the Golden Hawks are already looking like a contender.

St. Pius X at Thomson

This is easily the game of the week: a pair of 2-0 top-10 teams square off at the Brickyard.
