Every team in Region 3-AAA has played a game, so we no longer have to give complete guesswork on how we think teams will do. At the same time, it's important to not put too much stock into just one week.
That being said, here are some thoughts:
-Burke County is good (again). This isn't a surprise, but the Bears could be the best in the region again. Even with a lot of penalties, the Bears beat a quality Baldwin team by 17 points. The most impressive thing I saw on Friday was their defense. It was exposed a bit in the semifinal loss to Carrollton but did very well against the Braves in week one. Except for blown coverage on one play, the defense was great.
-Thomson is 1-0 under new head coach Milan Turner. The Bulldogs were supposed to win rather easily, but 53-6 is eye-opening nonetheless. This could be a Top 10 team soon, if it isn't in the poll this week.
-Washington County scored an good 28-17 win at Jefferson County. The Golden Hawks tied the Warriors last season and could be a Top 10 team. William Walker had 187 passing yards with three touchdowns and added 66 rushing yards in the win. He will be a handful for foes.
There are some intriguing early-season games this upcoming weekend. Lakeside, with quarterback Mark Weidenaar, is at home against Thomson. The Bulldogs won on late heroics last year, 10-9, so it'll be interesting to see if this year's meeting could somehow top that.
But the one most people are excited about is Laney at Josey. A Saturday game, the stadium will be packed. There's also going to be a parade and dedication, so it should be a special day in Augusta. Full event details can be found here.
