A.R. Johnson wins first place in national competition

The Try-Math-A-Lon team from A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering Magnet School finished in first place Thursday in the TMAL World national competition held in Toronto.

The competition, sponsored by the National Society of Black Engineers, has three parts: a progress assessment test; an engineering contest; and a quiz bowl. The competition's questions included topics such as averages, percentages and ratios; velocity and acceleration; word problems; unit conversion; and scientific notation. It also tests the team's knowledge about the society's history and engineering.

The team's members are: Brandon Herrington, Chantilly Jaggernauth, Stephen Brown, Raquel Edwards and Lora Golden.

The team's math coaches, Anthony Stawiery and Jacqueline Wilder, accompanied the team to the competition. Aleks Holiday is the advisor.
