I moved to Augusta in 2008 to cover religion for the Chronicle. I didn't know a soul this far South at the time, but the area is quickly becoming home. Before then, I covered the cop beat and crime while working at a newspaper in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. I got my start in Virginia writing features for a community weekly while in college.

Watch the SBC annual meeting live

The two-day annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention began this morning in New Orleans, home of the Rev. Fred Luter, who is running unopposed for president of the denomination. He would be the first black president in the 167-year history of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Several folks from the Augusta area are in Louisiana this week for the event. Those back home can watch live online. Look for the video streaming link to the lower right on the page.

The election of officers is expected to occur late this afternoon.

This afternoon will also include discussion on the proposed, informal name change that would allow churches to also idenitfy as "Great Comission Baptists."
