I have been a photojournalist for over 40 years. I started as a lab tech at the San Antonio Light and was their photo director 20 years later when the paper closed their doors. I came to the Augusta Chronicle 19 years ago as photo director and transfered to the Columbia County bureau three years later when the company purchased the Columbia County News-Times. I am curently a staff photographer for the Columbia County News-Times.

Photography for Fun

I am frequently asked if I still enjoy photography as a hobby since I spend all day taking photos for a living. The answer is yes. I always have a camera handy wherever I go. Lately I've been sitting on my screened-in back porch in the evenings with a telephoto lens aimed at the birdbath in the garden. I removed two panels of the screen to I would have an unobstructed shot. Then I just sit back in my suburban blind with a good book, something cold to drink, a fan blowing in my direction and wait for something to happen. The birdfeeders are nearby so it doesn't take long for the feathered critters to show up. Since I'm just shooting for fun and not the newspaper I get to cheat a little bit. I keep moving the birdbath and flower pots to arrange different settings - a big NO-NO in photojournalism. In this shot I moved a large pot with lilies in it behind the birdbath.
