NeSmith could have PGA Tour double

If North Augusta's Matt NeSmith catches fire this weekend and rallies to win The Players Amateur in Bluffton, S.C., the teenager would earn his second PGA Tour start.

NeSmith, 18, will make his PGA Tour debut Aug. 16 in the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C. He got in that one by virtue of winning the American Junior Golf Association's FJ Championship earlier this summer.

The Players Amateur, which consists mainly of top college and veteran amateur golfers, is run by the Heritage Classic Foundation. That group is the operational and financial oversight group for the PGA Tour's RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Because of its ties with the RBC Classic, which is held the week after the Masters Tournament, the winner of The Players Championship on Sunday will receive a spot in the RBC Classic.

NeSmith needs to go low this weekend to get that second PGA Tour start. Going into Saturday's third round, he's eight shots off the lead.
