GreenJackets Wrap-up: Augusta rips Greenville for 14 runs

Wednesday, August 14 - Augusta 14, Greenville 1

The Augusta GreenJackets came away with 14 runs in a rout of the Greenville Drive on Wednesday night, but manager Mike Goff went back to starter Kendry Flores and another solid outing from the durable right-hander in the game.

Flores allowed one run on three hits in six innings, walking one and striking out four. He didn't have his best stuff, missing his spots at times and not throwing his best secondaries, but the fact that he was off by a fraction and still gave up just three hits and one walk is a testament to his season.

Flores maintained his velocity late into his outing and had a decent fastball working. His curveball spun pretty well and he kept it away from bats. The changeup wasn't at its best against a lefty-heavy lineup, leading to some hard line drives at times, but most of them found gloves. Overall, it was another solid start for the right-hander at only 81 pitches, meaning a fresher arm after a 100+ pitch outing last time.

The GreenJackets took advantage of two struggling Greenville pitchers in Cody Kukuk and Yunior Ortega, who combined to allow 12 runs. Kukuk walked six in a little more than two full innings, adding to his already very high walk percentage. The left-hander does have a very solid fastball that sat low-to-mid-90s, and it comes very easily to Kukuk. But he struggled throwing anything for a strike.

Chuckie Jones continued to rip pitching by going deep on a hard line drive to left field for three runs. He added a double and walk and has eight hits, three homers and eight RBI in his past five games.

The rest of the lineup contributed in similar fashion. Augusta got its first look at Rando Moreno, who doubled in his first at-bat, showing an aggressive swing with good bat speed. Moreno also had an outstanding pivot and throw to first base to turn a double play, flashing a solid arm and release.

The GreenJackets also saw the return of Jesus Galindo, who has been on the disabled list with a pulled quad since July 23. Galindo struck out in his only at-bat, coming in late and playing the final couple innings in center field.
