GreenJackets Wrap-up: Gregorio, Okert pulled with injuries in 2 Augusta wins

Thursday, August 1 - Augusta 2, Charleston 0; Augusta 5, Charleston 4

The GreenJackets picked up a suspended game from July 7 with the RiverDogs and neither team scored over the final four innings. It would have been easier to just give Augusta the win a month ago.

It would have also saved Steven Okert's leg. The left-handed reliever was expected to go the final four innings for Augusta, but two batters into the game a line drive hit his leg flush, and he was immediately pulled. Manager Mike Goff said he will have an X-ray in the morning with the hope that it's only a deep bruise.

The GreenJackets were forced to pull their Game 2 starter, as well. Joan Gregorio threw four innings before leaving in the fifth with a blister on his right middle finger. The injury, which has caused Martin Agosta to miss a significant amount of time now, is similar to Agosta's and could lead to an extended time out. This isn't certain, but it's a definite possibility.

Before leaving, Gregorio looked very good, striking out five and inducing 11 swinging strikes in four innings. He walked four, but two were charged while fighting through the blister.

Augusta's Shawn Payne has been a spark for the GreenJackets since returning, entering with eight hits in his first seven games with the club. That continued with a huge RBI double in the sixth inning of Game 2 that led to a win.

Payne is a very athletic outfielder with a quick bat who has experienced struggles in levels beyond A-ball. Mashing in Augusta is almost to be expected for Payne at this point, and it's whether he can adjust to a higher level that remains to be seen. But for now, the GreenJackets will gladly take the offense from the leadoff spot.
