GreenJackets Gameday: Biagini returns home to favorable numbers

Monday, July 22 - 7:05 p.m.

Asheville Tourists (12-16, 50-46)

T.J. Oakes (97 IP, 4.08 ERA, 4.41 FIP, 12.9 K%, 6.6 BB%, .297 BABIP)

Augusta GreenJackets (14-13, 52-44)

Joe Biagini (76.1 IP, 4.60 ERA, 3.38 FIP, 17.6 K%, 8.4 BB%, .314 BABIP)

Joe Biagini's worst start this season came May 4 against Asheville, so there should be a little revenge on the mind.

Biagini allowed four earned runs and six total in only 1.1 innings against the Tourists that day at Lake Olmstead, including five walks and three strikeouts. After one more shaky outing, he went on a tear where he shut down the SAL for a month, allowing no more than two earned runs in six consecutive starts.

That tear ended July 1 against Kannapolis, allowing six runs on 11 hits in five innings. He backed that with five runs in four innings against Savannah and three runs in 3.2 innings against Charleston. All three of these starts were on the road, so getting back home should be a plus for the big right-hander. He has a 1.93 ERA in five home starts compared to a 6.14 ERA in 10 road starts.

T.J. Oakes is a 6-foot-5 right-hander drafted in the 11th round in 2012 out of Minnesota. The 23-year-old pitches to contact and looks for ground balls, but a 43 percent ground ball rate this year indicates he isn't getting as many wormburners as he'd like. A pedestrian strikeout percentage is helped by a low walk percentage and batting average on balls in play.

Oakes has been solid the last three times out, allowing a combined two earned runs in his past 13.2 innings, striking out 10 and walking five. He has progressively gotten better as the season goes on, earning a better ERA each month. The GreenJackets have yet to see him this season.

Roster shuffling should be in the future after it was announced shortstop Matt Duffy was being assigned to San Jose after Sunday's game. Also, a status update on Martin Agosta should be on the horizon.
