GreenJackets Wrap-up: Lujan, Aquino both effective over 6-plus innings

Saturday, July 20 - Augusta 4, Asheville 1

As I said prior to the game, you can't predict the outcome of a single baseball game, but the outcome of this one was a little easier to see.

Asheville's Jayson Aquino and Augusta's Matt Lujan both pitched very effectively from the left side for six-plus innings - in Lujan's case, seven full. One had the better outcome, but both looked very good.

Lujan allowed one run on five hits in seven innings, walking three and striking out seven. He had true swing-and-miss stuff in this start, which is a little rare for the left-hander who pitches to contact more often. He actually did both. He used an effective fastball/slider combination to gain the majority of his whiffs, while also inducing 10 ground balls. One came in the seventh inning on a double play in a big spot.

Aquino impressed me greatly over six innings. As reports indicated, he threw a ton of changeups, including many early in counts, and he fed off a combination of changeups and curveballs. The breaking ball flashed plus, showing very good bite and late break for the most part. The changeup was plus throughout. His first change of the game led to a raise of the eyebrows from this writer. It showed solid fade away from right-handed batters, as well as good arm action and separation.

Aquino's fastball is enough to get by and won't hurt him in the upper levels. It runs 88-91 with some movement, and he commanded the pitch well. Combined with one plus pitch and the potential for two, and you have a true left-handed starter in the 20-year-old.

GreenJackets DH Mitch Delfino went 2 for 4 for the second consecutive night and has one double in each of his past four games. While he doesn't have a single walk over the past 10 games, he only has three strikeouts. He's putting the ball in play, and the doubles streak is important for this.

Jesus Galindo reached twice on a single and walk, and drove in two runs. Alberto Robles singled home a run.
