GreenJackets Gameday: Agosta returns following DL stint

Friday, June 5 - 7:05 p.m.

Charleston RiverDogs (7-7)

Cesar Vargas (68.1 IP, 3.42 ERA, 3.38 FIP, 21.6 K%, 8.7 BB%, .280 BABIP)

Augusta GreenJackets (8-6)

Martin Agosta (69.2 IP, 2.20 ERA, 2.94 FIP, 31.7 K%, 10.3 BB%, .270 BABIP)

The GreenJackets officially activated Martin Agosta from the disabled list and list him as the probable starter for tonight's game. He missed one start with a tired arm after leaving a June 22 start after one inning. Manager Mike Goff said after the game that Agosta was dealing with a dead arm and would likely miss one start to rest it. That proved to be the case.

How Agosta's arm responds to the rest will be key. His velocity will be the test, especially in the later innings, and whether his mechanics hold after fighting to ramp up the velocity in that one-inning start.

Athleticism is on Agosta's side, however, and that's important to maintaining mechanics. The right-hander has a repeatable delivery without a ton of effort.

Cesar Vargas has faced Augusta twice, both times allowing one earned run in five innings. His stuff hasn't been overly impressive, but he limits walks at a decent rate and can rack up a few strikeouts while avoiding hard contact. He struggled with short outings earlier in the season, but he has gone at least five innings in each of his past three starts.

Vargas' batted-ball numbers are league average across the board, but he has benefited from a .280 BABIP. He will likely get a few more fly balls than ground balls, which helps in spacious Lake Olmstead Stadium.

The GreenJackets placed reliever Stephen Johnson on the disabled list as the corresponding move for Agosta. Johnson has a 5.57 ERA with 41 strikeouts in 32.1 innings this season.
