GreenJackets Wrap-up: Savannah slugs past Augusta to take series

Sunday, May 19 - Sand Gnats 12, GreenJackets 10

A back-and-forth game basically ended in the seventh inning when Savannah center fielder Eudy Pina cleared the bases on a double for three runs, giving the Sand Gnats a six-run lead at the time.

Pina drilled a 1-2 fastball, waist high, to deep center over Jesus Galindo's head. Manager Mike Goff said there was no excuse for the pitch from Brandon Farley. But it seemed to be a trend from GreenJackets pitchers in the game.

It began with Martin Agosta, who lasted just 3.1 innings, allowing four runs on four hits with five walks and five strikeouts. Agosta constantly goes ahead in the count but fails to put hitters away in an efficient way. It's weird to say for a guy who is second in the South Atlantic League in strikeout percentage, but he struggles to minimize his pitch count, nibbling off the black and eventually forcing either a ball over the plate in a full count or a walk.

Agosta's troubles can be cured by more efficient offerings when ahead in the count. Throwing down the thirds of the plate instead of the corners would help. It's a matter of Agosta trusting his stuff and command when he has two strikes on hitters.

Mason McVay struck out two in 2.2 innings, but he got knocked around for six hits and three runs. Farley allowed five runs - four earned - in two innings, walking four.

The only good effort from an Augusta pitcher was Tyler Mizenko's scoreless inning in the ninth.

The GreenJackets swung the bats well, totaling 17 hits, including three home runs. Charles Jones and Andrew Cain launched moonshots over the ad boards in left field, and Mitch Delfino poked one just fair down the left field line. Delfino ended the series with two long balls.

The series with the Sand Gnats was a rollercoaster. In order, the GreenJackets scored 0, 11, 1 and 10 runs. They allowed 6, 0, 3, 12 runs.
