GreenJackets Gameday: Agosta seeks better outing vs. Savannah

Sunday, May 19 - 2:05 p.m.

Savannah Sand Gnats (23-17)

RHP Luis Cessa (34.1 IP, 3.93 ERA, 4.25 FIP, 20 K%, 4 BB%, .306 BABIP)

Augusta GreenJackets (24-17)

RHP Martin Agosta (37.1 IP, 2.17 ERA, 2.40 FIP, 34.2 K%, 9.9 BB%, .317 BABIP)

Cessa has been a steady starter for the Sand Gnats so far this season, allowing no more than five earned in any outing, while totaling five walks in 34.1 innings. His most recent start was one of his shakier ones, walking four in six innings, but he minimized the damage with just three runs.

Cessa has a low strand rate at 68 percent, which is surprising considering the relatively good ERA. Either it's random variation by small sample size, or Cessa's stuff declines from the stretch. It's worth watching if the GreenJackets continue their solid on-base numbers.

Agosta has struck out seven or more in six of his seven starts this season, and he did a better job minimizing his pitch count last time out, allowing two runs in six innings while walking two. Agosta has the second best strikeout rate in the South Atlantic League and is among the best in all of Minor League Baseball. That will be put to the test against Savannah, which held Agosta to just two strikeouts while allowing three earned runs in 3.2 innings in his second outing of the season.
