Saturday, May 18 - Sand Gnats 3, GreenJackets 1
The pregame blog post was focused on the starters, but Savannah catcher Kevin Plawecki changed the focus in a hurry.
Plawecki went 2 for 2 with one RBI and was hit twice, reaching base four times. He drove in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Plawecki was picked in the supplemental first round in 2012 out of Purdue, his pick being the compensation for the New York Mets losing Jose Reyes. He's an offense-first catcher, showing home run power to the pull side and some easy raw in batting practice. He also has a very good hit tool and knows the strike zone well as an advanced college hitter.
Behind the plate, Plawecki is a durable big body, and he shows good footwork. His arm is a tick below average, and his arm motion is lower than one would like, but his defensive profile is enough to stick there.
Plawecki and Jayce Boyd had GreenJackets starter Matt Lujan's number over four combined at-bats, reaching base all four times by hits. Lujan likely profiles as a reliever down the road, showing the ability to spot his high-80s/low-90s fastball fairly well, while burying a curve or two on right-handed batters' feet. His changeup didn't get many whiffs, however.
Manager Mike Goff said his hitters failed to adjust to Savannah starter Matt Koch's stuff, continually taking the fastball away and falling into poor counts. Koch throws everything away to survive, and GreenJackets hitters didn't cover the outer half, resulting in six solid innings for the right-hander.
