GreenJackets Gameday: Lujan makes Augusta debut

Saturday, May 18 - 7:05 p.m.

Savannah Sand Gnats (22-17)

RHP Matthew Koch (23.1 IP, 5.40 ERA, 3.16 FIP, 19.8 K%, 0 BB%, .346 BABIP)

Augusta GreenJackets (24-16)

LHP Matthew Lujan (First appearance of 2013)

Koch is on an impressive streak of 23.1 innings without allowing a walk. His strikeout numbers are better than one might expect for someone with such good control, too. Obviously, the walk streak won't last forever, but neither will his high ERA, as his .346 BABIP and 3.16 FIP show the ERA should come down some. Whether the regression begins in this game or another outing is the question.

Lujan is making his 2013 debut, as well as his Augusta and A-ball debut. Manager Mike Goff said he won't know that much about him until he sees him pitch, but he heard Lujan is a crafty lefty with a good changeup, and he throws strikes.

Strike throwing shows in Lujan's numbers. In 37 innings in the Arizona League last season, the 24-year-old had a 1.95 ERA with 35 strikeouts and 11 walks. He was a swingman for the AZL Giants, making seven starts and 11 total appearances, so jumping into the Augusta rotation shouldn't be a big adjustment.

Lujan's first pitch will give the GreenJackets their first start from a left-hander this season. The Sand Gnats only have one active position player who hits from the left side, so expect a heavy dose of changeups from Lujan.
