Weekly picks in Georgia high school football

Westside at Vidalia

The 5-5 Patriots are definitely in a slump, considering they’ve lost four games in a row. But Westside still made the playoffs for the first time since 2005. Unfortunately for the Patriots, it will be a short experience.

Vidalia, 42-7

Bacon County at Screven County

Region champion Screven County is 9-1 thanks to bruising back Jeremy Johnson. Now the Gamecocks have to play fourth-seeded Bacon County. The two have met twice before, but that was back in 1996 and 1997. Expect this to be a close one.

Screven County, 21-14

Benedictine at Laney

The Wildcats have a home playoff game for the second year in a row. They’ll also try to win a playoff game in back-to-back years, something that hasn’t happened since 2005-2006. Laney’s explosiveness is the difference.

Laney, 27-21

Bowdon at Washington-Wilkes

The Tigers, ranked No. 8 in the Class AA poll, have nine wins this season, a total that matches their win total from the previous two seasons combined. But the challenge is to end a five-game losing streak in state playoff games.

Washington-Wilkes, 35-27

Jackson at Thomson

Thomson, No. 1 in Class AAA, met Jackson in the first round of the playoffs just four years ago. The Bulldogs won 28-14 in that one and should get another victory here. Thomson will get a home playoff win after losing at home in the first round in 2011.

Thomson, 35-14

Pike County at Washington County

The Golden Hawks’ only loss this season was to Thomson, so Washington County is a very strong No. 2 seed. These two teams have never played each other before, but Washington County is home and has an explosive offense.

Washington County, 28-14

Jefferson County at Peach County

This is a tough matchup for the Warriors. Jefferson County plays a second seed, but Peach County is one of the best teams in Class AAA. The Trojans are 9-1, with the only loss coming to Carver (Columbus). Peach County reached the state final in 2011.

Peach County, 31-7

Perry at Burke County

The 9-1 Bears are on a roll behind quarterback Donquell Green and an improving supporting cast. The Panthers have three close losses, so while they may be a sneaky No. 4 seed, Burke County won’t lose.

Burke County, 42-21

Lakeside at Ware County

The Panthers are in the state playoffs for the third time in four seasons, so Lakeside is becoming a consistent playoff team. But knocking off the Gators would be an upset, as Ware County has won nine in a row and is sixth in the state.

Ware County, 34-10
