What's in a name?

Only six suggestions remain in the running for the name of the consolidated Augusta State and Georgia Health Sciences universities, but one name won’t be changed.

No matter if University of Augusta or Bartram University or any of the other four options is picked (vote here!), the Jaguars nickname will stay. It’s certainly unique enough – no Wildcats or Bulldogs here – but I do wonder if everyone has thought about how the nickname will look alongside the new name.

The Augusta University Jaguars? Obviously close to the current one. But the Noble University Jaguars? Definitely a different feel.

“Noble” is for Noble Jones, but when I hear the name, I immediately think of Alfred Nobel. My mind then goes to a Jaguar mascot dressed in a white laboratory coat ... with a gold medal around the neck, surrounded by dynamite.

Again, though the nickname isn't going anywhere, I do like thinking about possibilities. Alliteration is always acceptable, so I’m thinking the University of Augusta Attack. With a Heat-Thunder Finals matchup this year, those tricky singular-or-is-it-plural nicknames are on the rise.

Anyone else have a nickname idea?

I think I would buy a T-shirt

I think I would buy a T-shirt featuring a jaguar wearing a gold medal in a lab coat surrounded by dynamite. I don't even care if it relates to a university. Show me that T-shirt, and I will probably pick one up.
