Augusta logistics company buys 10 acre warehouse

One of the largest logistics centers in Augusta is off the market.

Scott Atkins, vice president of Meybohm Commercial Properties, was involved in the sale of the old Bill’s Dollar Store distribution center across from Augusta Regional Airport.

RBW Logistics, based in Augusta and one of the largest logistics firms in the state, bought the 400,000 square foot building. (That’s 10 acres under roof.)

Atkins, who represents the seller, said RBW has been one of the main tenants in the building over the years.

The seller was NBTY Inc., which made a big media splash in 2005 when it announced that it was going to build a manufacturing plant for an energy bar and create 600 jobs in three years.

Atkins said NBTY got half way through building out its manufacturing space when they changed the formula of the energy bar, ultimately deciding to make it elsewhere. NBTY is the company behind the Vitamin World retail chain and MET-Rx, Carb Solutions and Sundown vitamin brands.

NBTY paid $10 million for the building in 2005. RBW bought it for $7.9 million, Atkins said. The deal closed on Monday.

Atkins has been handling the building for a long time. It was built in 1999 for the expansion of discount chain Bill’s Dollar Store and was supposed to support the growth of 100 stores in the region.

Bill’s went bankrupt. And the warehouse was leased out until NBTY bought it.

“I’ve said it many times, that building is like a child. I handled it for so long. I don’t know whether to be glad or sad,” Atkins said. “It was part of what I did on a weekly basis.”
