Spending is an economic indicator. One way to measure spending in the Augusta area is through the sales tax receipts coming back to the city.
With four months of 2012 in the books, the city is 1 percent ahead of last year.
Year-to-date to April, Augusta collected $12.40 million in local sales tax, and $12.76 more in SPLOST.
In 2011, it collected $12.29 million in LOST and $12.59 million in SPLOST.
Georgia, on the other hand, collected $1.84 billion in sales tax from January to April, up from $1.75 billion in those four months in 2011 – a 4.8 percent increase.

Balfour Beatty announced the completion of 310 new homes and the renovation of 577 others on the base. It was a $92 million project and significant money to be spending on the installation.
The new construction, completed eight months ahead of schedule, brings the total number of homes managed and maintained by Balfour Beatty Communities at Fort Gordon to 1,080 units.
Now that Balfour Beatty has finished, just a press release goes out. No ceremony. No chance to talk to the folks that live in the housing (or compare and contrast what was once there).
And people in the know aren’t saying why.
