Edgefield proving ground could become General Dynamics property

An Edgefield military vehicle proving ground is now going to be in the hands of one of the largest military vehicle makers in the world.

Force Protection, based in Charleston, is being bought out by General Dynamics.

Since 2007, Force Protection has used a range in Edgefield to test its armored vehicles.

General Dynamics will acquire Force Protection in a stock buy of about $360 million. Force Protection will then become a part of General Dynamics Land Systems, which is the subsidiary that makes Abrams main battle tanks and Stryker infantry combat vehicles. Force Protection has made a name for itself in creating armored mine-resistant transportation – when IED blasts were commonly in the headlines of Iraq war news.

The merger isn’t finished yet cause the matter has to go through the stockholders and then the federal anti-trust red tape, so look for the done deal by the end of the year, both companies say.

THE LOT IS FULL: Its been a couple of years since cars have been seen parked in the old Toyota dealership on Washington Road across from Picadilly.

The Bob Richards group bought the lot in March and are establishing a used-car dealership there.

There haven’t been cars for sale there since January 2009. That’s when Milton Ruben acquired Toyota and moved the dealership a few miles down the road.

PLEASE COME TO DENVER: ESi, one of the Augusta area’s tech firms, will hold its next annual convention in Denver in May 2012, at the request of its customers.

For 2013, however, it will be back in Augusta, and will be taking advantage of the downtown convention center expansion.

BEYOND AIKEN: Prestige Appliance is celebrating its expansion beyond the CSRA. The Aiken-based appliance store has a new one open in Lexington, S.C.
