The diversity of ethnic cuisines available in the Augusta area is amazing. The latest addition is Turk, available at Shishkebab Restaurant in the old Huddle House on North Belair Road across from Lowe's in Evans.
Lunch Buddy Donna and I visited on a recent Wednesday and shared a lamb shish kebab ( $ 7.95) and gyro wrap ($5.95).
Wow.
This was great food, perfectly seasoned and pleasingly presented.
The lamb was served on a bed of pilaf with pine nuts that was delectable, and the gyro was a tasty mix of beef and lamb.
I also had a cup of Turkish tea ($1). It's served hot and has an earthy, roasted taste. It comes in a petite cup, and that's all you need, because it packs a wallop akin to a can of energy drink.
One of the staffers had to leave because of a medical emergency just before we arrived, and our server apologized for tardy service. Apologies were definitely unnecessary: Service was prompt and attentive.
There are Turkish mementoes scattered about, but the dining room still feels very much like a Huddle House. There are stools fronting the grill and tables around the periphery.
The menu is intriguing and worthy of further sampling on repeat visits. Borek ($5.95 , a pastry with feta cheese) and Sucuklu Tost ($5.95, a Turkish sausage wrap) look especially interesting.
Shishkebab has separate lunch and dinner menus, with prices rising significantly for dinner. The dinner menu is more elaborate, through.
