Rocking Rachmaninoff

A few words on the great Russian Rachmaninoff before I sign off. Compositionally speaking, Rachi is not a man to trifle with. His compositions are not just complex and technically demanding, but they also force an orchestra to wear its collective heart on its sleeve. It isn’t nearly enough to play a Rachmaninoff symphony taking care to ensure every note ends up in the right place. This is music written with great emotion and intended to be played with great emotion. It’s a lot harder than it sounds, particularly when that task means getting dozens of disparate musicians on the same emotional page. My hardiest congratulations to Z and the SOA for not only ensuring each note was played properly, but also with passion. A great way to wrap up a new beginning. Symphonic music in Augusta just got really interesting.
