We're running out of time!

This is not a couch to half-marathon program. If you have never run, forget about running 13.1-miles. You might make it, but there's a good chance you'll get hurt along the way.

This blog is for serious runners who are physically fit and have run at least a 10K in the past few months. Anything less, and you should consider competing in the 10K race held on the same morning.

I have no way of knowing your fitness level, nor how fast you can run. I can't tell you how many miles you need to run this week or next. But what I can do is tell you what I did when I ran the race in February 2013 - my first half-marathon.

You'll learn from my success and failure. You'll also get some sound advice from local running experts.

Getting ready for a half-marathon takes time and committment. It also takes some cash. The longer you wait to sign up, the more expensive it gets. Here's a rundown of the pricing and deadlines for the 2014 race.

GRU Augusta Half Marathon - February 23, 2014
November 1 - December 31, 2013 - $55
January 1 - February 21, 2014 - $60
February 22, 2014 - $80

There is no registration the day of the race.

Sometimes it's better to wait and see how training goes before making the committment. That was my strategy for two years.

I planned to run the half in 2012 but a bad case of the flu kept me from training. The same year I wanted to run the Rock 'n' Roll Savannah 1/2 Marathon but my asthma was too severe at that time of year.

The third time was the charm. I finished in 2 hours 19 minutes - a slow and easy run without injury. That's what I would recommend you should do. Enjoy your first half-marathon. You can go for speed next time.

Registration is quick and easy.  Click here to visit the online registration site.

My advice for today is to start running. One run a week is not enough. You'll need to run at least twice a week for now. In a short time you will need three days of training with a day or two of strength training.

Get to it! We're running out of time here!

I'd like to join you, but I have two good reasons for not competing this year. I broke my ankle in two places in May and I just can't run right now. Maybe next year. :(
