U.S. Open pairings

There is nothing random about U.S. Open pairings. The blue coats at the USGA have long had fun trying to come up with creative threesomes, and were way ahead of the PGA Tour’s curve in creating the marquee matchups.

Next week when the 2012 U.S. Open tees off on the first and ninth holes (that’s not a mistake, the split tees will include the ninth hole because of its proximity to the clubhouse compared to the 10th), some eye-opening and thought-provoking groups will be sent forth to wage battle against par at The Olympic Club.

The biggest late/early headliner group will be the 1-2-3 pairing of Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood. The top three ranked players in the world will be a primetime first-round matchup teeing off the first hole at 4:29 p.m. EDT on Thursday. Their British bragging-rights match will resume Friday a.m. from the ninth tee at 10:44 a.m.

Not to be outdone by the international heavyweights, the USGA will balance out the tee sheet with an equally stout American threesome of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson, who count eight Masters green jackets between them. They drew the early/late schedule with a 10:33 a.m. EDT opening round starting at the ninth before shifting to the primetime TV slot at 4:18 p.m. on Friday from the first tee.

It wasn’t so long ago that Tiger and Phil were in that 1-2-3 pairing along with Adam Scott in the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, marking the first time the USGA had ever sent out the top three ranked players in the world together in the opening rounds.

Here are a few of the other interesting arrangements the USGA has dreamed up for our tee-sheet viewing pleasure (all times converted to EDT):

They list residence instead

They list residence instead of hometown - except for foreign-born players, oddly.

The threesome of Tiger, Phil

The threesome of Tiger, Phil & Bubba will garner a lot of attention. This is not a good group for Tiger to be in since he always plays lousy against Phil and he is going to be with 2 lefties. Let's see what happens.
