Hot Edge Volleyball

We photojournalists often like our lighting nice and even.  Although I can think of many exceptions, we usually don't like details lost to shadows or an over exposed highlight. So you can imagine my disappointment when I arrived at Grovetown High School recently to shoot a volleyball game and found the gym floor checkered with burning highlights. It was caused by the afternoon sun shining through a few small, high windows.  At first I fought it and tried to expose for the ambient light inside the gym - pretty much the way I'd shoot any other volleyball game.  This was  a bit frustrating because if a player crossed into the sun stream they were instantly over exposed and the picture would be unusable.  Finally I got smart and decided  to expose for the highlights and let the background go dark.  Click here to see the result:
