If a secluded island sounds like the perfect vacation, look no further than Little St. Simons Island off the Georgia Coast.
The island is accessible only by boat, and its six cottages will accommodate no more than 32 guests.
Most of the 10,000-acre island is a wildlife preserve. Twenty acres have been developed to provide lodging and recreation.
Guided tours get you close with the flora and fauna of the island. During June, naturalists will guide you as you watch baby armadillos and marsh rabbits on the beach, or watch loggerhead turtles lay eggs. Look for alligators in the marsh.
The island has seven miles of private beaches. When the sun becomes too much, you can explore the island by bike or by foot, and the waterways by kayak, canoe or motorized skiff.
Saturday lunches are served on thebeach, and a picnic is available on re-quest. Other meals are served in the Hunting Lodge dining room. Guests can reserve a room, cottage or whole island.
Day trips are available for those who would rather overnight on the mainland. The ferry leaves St. Simons Island at 10:30 a.m. and returns at 4:30 p.m. each day. Prices for overnight stay start at $600.
