Butler completes full Ironman

Augusta businessman Paul Butler competed in the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii over the weekend.

Note that this was a full Ironman: 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run. Butler's company, ESi, is the title sponsor of the Ironman 70.3 Augusta, a half-Ironman event that was held last month.

Butler, 70, finished 16th in his age group with an overall time of 16 hours, 11 minutes and 56 seconds.

Arnold Barrett, Butler's friend, took video from the event.

The bike course head winds

The bike course head winds were the worst in years on the 112 mile course. Several locals told me that they only get winds like that several times a year. Paul did extraordinary especially given the conditions.

The video was taken just outside the bike to run transistion area on the King K Hotel pier as Paul came off the 112 mile bike to head out onto the
26.2 mile marathon. Hopefully, the video provided some of the atmosphere of the World Championship Race in Hawaii.

Note, only the top age groupers in other Ironman sponsored races can qualify to even compete in this Elite Race. It's what all long course triathletes dream of competing in.

Way to go Paul, admirably nicknamed Ultimo due to his incredible persistence in the Lanzarote Ironman in 2006. Welcome to our club; Kona Ironman!

It is due to the efforts of Paul Butler, CFO of ESi, and Randy DuTeau of the Augusta Sports Council, that Augusta now hosts the largest ( in number of participants ) half distance Ironman triathlon race in North America. A great economic boom to the cities economy.

The taped and edited version of the NBC 2012 Ironman World Championship will be aired Saturday, October 27, 2012 from 4 to 6pm EST.
