Monday Morning Sports Editor

A few thoughts on what happened over the weekend in the world of sports and a look ahead to this week:

Thomson plays at Columbus today in the Class AAA baseball semifinals. Follow the action as prep writer Wayne Staats blogs from Columbus today.

Congrats:

To Augusta State's golf team, for successfully making it back to the NCAA Division I golf championship. The Jaguars face a tall order in repeating as national champs, but most folks thought they couldn't do it last year, either.

To Gary Gilmore, former USC Aiken baseball coach. He won his 900th career game last week, and now he hopes to guide Coastal Carolina all the way to Omaha, Neb., for the College World Series.

To South Carolina's baseball team. The defending national champs clinched a share of the SEC regular season title and will begin the conference tournament this week as the No. 1 seed.

Sympathies:

To all the horse racing fans looking for a Triple Crown. Shackleford's victory in the Preakness denied Animal Kingdom a chance to take all three at the Belmont. No horse has won all three big races since Affirmed in 1978, and it's looking doubtful that we'll see one anytime soon.

To NBA fans. It's bad enough that games start after 9 p.m. on weekdays, but the schedule makes no sense. The Heat-Bulls series had a four-day layoff. Why? I blame TV.

To cycling fans who have to put up with all this talk about Lance Armstrong. Enough of the "he said, he said" stuff. Armstrong is a tremendous athlete, but what he did (get better as he grew older) seemed to defy logic in a grueling sport.

Throwing it out there:

In honor of the big races this weekend (Indy 500, Coca-Cola 600), what are the best racing movies of all time? Check back later this week and I'll put my two cents in.
