This is American Idol.
Other than “Georgia wins,” that has to be my favorite phrase in the English language. Yes, folks, it’s that time of the year again. The pop cultural phenomenon and TV juggernaut is returning for Season 8 on Tuesday (8 p.m., Fox). And this blog is going to be with you every step of the way until a new winner is crowned in May.
First things first, let me tell you a little about me. I’m a copy editor on the sports desk here at the Chronicle. But more importantly – as far as readers of this blog should be concerned – I’m an avid viewer of American Idol. I’ve been hooked ever since I stumbled upon the reality competition in the summer of 2002 and watched Kelly Clarkson, a virtually unknown singer-songwriter, become a pop superstar overnight. I host viewing parties for big episodes. I attend the Idols Live! concerts (I drove to Charlotte last year). I passionately debate friends – and sometimes myself – about the contestants’ song choices and the judges’ critiques. And I usually end up writing down those thoughts. So here we are.
You can expect recaps every night after episodes, which air Tuesday and Wednesdays along with Thursday on occasion. I’ll also provide as much news and gossip as I can throughout the week. I’m going to want to hear what you have to say, too. Your thoughtful – and respectful – opinions are always welcome in the comments section.
I'll have more for you tomorrow. In the meantime, check out this USA Today article from over the weekend, which should serve as a good preview of the upcoming season. And then this Entertainment Weekly profile on Idol's new judge, Kara DioGuardi.
