WHAT'S TRENDY

New York Fashion Week shows this past week offered some interesting ideas for next spring, but some of them you can start working into your wardrobe right away.
In the Vivienne Tam collection, there were several really gorgeous velvet pieces that she mixed with a light silk or chiffon fabric to keep it light.
If you're not sure how to wear velvet before evening, try starting out with a well-cut blazer. J.Crew sells their "schoolboy blazer" in six colors.
Another way to work velvet into your fall and winter wardrobe is a good pair of shoes. ASOS.com has a beautiful ballet flat with a floppy bow that will look great with a cute dress or peeping out from under a pair of tweed pants.

WHAT'S AFFORDABLE
Corner shelves are a great way to efficiently use space, and I found a great way to get one without having to bring in a contractor.
Get an upright magazine holder made out of wood, the kind that is like a hollow box with the corner chopped off. Turn the holder on its side and set it in the corner where you want your catch-all shelf. Screw it into the wall, and you're all set.
If you want to get fancy, you can stain the magazine holder before mounting it onto your wall. Make it an easy cell phone charging station by cutting a small hole in the bottom of the shelf to thread your charge cord through.

WHAT'S NEW
If you haven't been to Tea With a Dutchess on Monte Sano Avenue, you should soon. Augusta's newest tea room offers a whopping 15 teas for your sipping pleasure, along with a selection of sandwiches, scones and other tea time treats.
High tea is served Tuesday through Saturday by reservation only, but customers can come by without reservation Tuesday through Friday for the rest of the menu.
Owner Laura Simmons told me the whole story for a Your Business story, read more about the tearoom here.
