Luis Campusano's rise in the baseball industry is taking perhaps the biggest step today.
The Cross Creek catcher is on the roster for Perfect Game's All-American Classic. The showcase game will start at 5 p.m. at Petco Park in San Diego. It will be televised on MLB Network and streamed live on MLB.com.
Campusano is set to play in the event, which is one of the highest honors for a high school baseball player. The annual game showcases much of the top draft talent for the following season. Many of the potential top picks for 2017 will be on the field tonight, and that includes the Razorback senior, who has developed into one of the top catchers in the country for his class.
Campusano has been mentioned several times on Perfect Game's running blog of the event, including a note that the ball jumped off his bat during a pre-event batting practice session. He's drawing nationwide attention for his ability to do multiple things at a high level, including power from an aggressive swing with lift, strong barrel skills, and a feel for catching well beyond his years. He also has a good arm behind the plate.
Evaluators are starting to mention him as perhaps the top prep catcher in the 2017 draft. A strong spring could cement that spot. The industry sees Campusano as a pop-up guy just now getting attention, but Augusta-area baseball fans who follow the scene closely have seen it for several years now.
The talent has been obvious for a while, and he's now getting his much-deserved recognition. An appearance on TV in the biggest showcase game of his life is a tremendous step.
