Braves, Giants prospect report: June 9-15

Games of June 9-15:

Performers for each level:

Braves AAA: Christian Bethancourt - 8-21, 3 RBI, BB

Bethancourt earns this honor for the second consecutive week. Over the past two weeks, he's hitting .383/.388/.447 with three doubles and six RBI. He's up to .274/.301/.371 with 14 extra-base hits in 209 plate appearances. Recent reports say Bethancourt could be in Atlanta soon, but adjustments will have to be made. It has taken significant time at each level, but this recent stretch has been his best at Gwinnett so far.

Braves AA: Aaron Northcraft - 12.2 IP, 14 H, 4 R/ER, 3 BB, 12 K

It's been a slow week for Mississippi, but Northcraft has been a bright spot despite 14 hits. The 12 strikeouts are a trend that has lasted all season, recording 61 in 62.2 innings. He has back-end potential, but he's making a case for a promotion to Triple-A before the end of the season.

Braves A+: Jose Peraza - 12-27, 2B, RBI, 5 SB; Kyle Wren - 11-21, 2B, RBI, 4 BB, 3 SB

Peraza and Wren have been nightmares for opposing pitchers at the top of the Lynchburg lineup. Peraza is hitting .342 with 35 stolen bases, and Wren is hitting .297 with a higher on-base percentage than Peraza and 31 stolen bases. The two have been lighting it up lately, too, and I couldn't choose between them for the better week-long performance. Peraza has the higher ceiling as a potential first-division second baseman, but Wren could run and field his way to a second-division starter role.

Braves A: Jacob Schrader - 10-26, 3 2B, 2 RBI

Schrader is striking out a lot and isn't keeping up with the walks, but he's hitting the ball hard lately. He has 18 extra-base hits in 209 plate appearances, good for a .455 slugging percentage this season. He needs to show better pitch recognition as a college product in the lower levels, but he has good power.

Giants AAA: Darren Ford - 10-23, 2B, 2 RBI

Ford is minor league depth for the Giants, but he's hitting well at Fresno - .306/.381/.396 with 10 stolen bases.

Giants AA: Matt Duffy - 9-20, 2B, HR, 6 RBI, 3 SB

Duffy is absolutely raking. Since May 27, he's hitting .467 with four extra-base hits, 13 RBI, eight walks and six stolen bases. It's rare to see a hitter punish Double-A in his first test like this, but Duffy has finally caught up to his equal level of competition for his age, and he's hitting like he should be even higher. Duffy has a realistic utility role in his future, but the added speed is a nice extra.

Giants A+: Chris Stratton - 14 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 17 K

Only one of Stratton's past two starts came during this span, but he deserves attention for two very solid outings. It's been a grind for Stratton this season, who's racking up strikeouts but also getting knocked around at times. Some label the stuff as hittable in the upper levels. It certainly is if he doesn't have command, but I've seen him with excellent stuff at times.

Giants A: Brandon Bednar - 10-27, 2 RBI, 4 BB, 2 SB

Bednar hasn't shown much besides the hit tool, but that one tool has carried him to a .282 average in the first half. He keeps his hands inside the ball and barrels it well. He will need to tap into some gap power and pick up spin better down the road. I've been labeling him as a realistic utility role.
